Bone in Washington, D.C. after the United States had entered the First World War; the collection also includes additional letters from Mrs. Bone to her son (including one addressed to both Carroll and another son, Scott), sent between 1924-1928, mainly to and from various addresses in California, 1 carbon copy of a letter initialed by Scott C. Bone, and 1 letter from Shirley Anne Starr, granddaughter of the Bones, addressed to Gov. Scott C. Bone in Pasadena.

Mary Worth Bone (1866-1948) was the wife of Scott C. Bone (1860-1936), a newspaperman, editor-in-chief of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (1911-1918), Alaska booster and the 10th Territorial Governor of Alaska (1921-1925). Both the former Mary Worth and her future husband were Indiana natives and Scott C. Bone would begin his long newspaper career in Indianapolis.
